Literacy Support at RMGS
At Rainham Mark Grammar School, we are committed to ensuring that all pupils achieve their very best academic outcomes; as part of this commitment, we strive to put in place programmes and support systems to allow for such success.
In Year 7, after an initial writing assessment, English teachers identify pupils from each form who would benefit from smaller group tuition. Pupils are then asked to attend Literacy Club once a week during registration in order to review the key skills through fun games and activities. In addition, we offer a weekly Spelling Club after school in order to develop pupils’ vocabularies.
In Years 8 and 9, pupils who need extra support in English are referred to the Literacy Coordinator who creates individual plans of action that suit the needs of each unique student. We also offer a weekly Handwriting Club to Year 8 pupils to develop the clarity, quality and appearance of their writing. In an effort to create a whole-school literacy community, Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh students have been working hard this year to develop resources for texts that they studied in Years 7 and 8 themselves, producing creative and exciting activities to be used in forthcoming lessons.
At GCSE, particularly Year 11, pupils run a programme called “The Reading Buddies” which is new to the English Department this year. This volunteer opportunity for Year 11 students allows them to work one-to-one with Year 7 students who are not always the keenest of readers. They are paired up and meet once a week to read to one another and discuss the books that are chosen by Year 7s.
Students are supported at A Level as well, and all pupils undertake a literacy test after entering the Sixth Form. After the test is taken, any pupils who may need support or who wish to self-refer themselves to the Literacy Coordinator can do so in a helpful environment. Individual action plans are produced at this level as well. In addition, Year 12 students have been engaging, sensitive support links during Literacy Club.
RMGS is therefore a school that seeks to create and sustain a whole-school approach to literacy, always searching out new, innovative ways to engage pupils in literacy, to make them the cornerstones of any developed programming whilst ensuring that each student leaves RMGS with literacy skills far beyond what is necessary to function in their adult lives.
