Please note that GCSE Dance will run as an extra option ONLY on an after school basis and will take place on one evening a week between 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm.

What is GCSE dance all about?

GCSE Dance involves learning about the history of Dance and the technique behind it so that you can develop your own choreography and performance skills. You will learn how to express yourself through the medium of dance and develop an understanding of style, form and choreographic devices.

The course is in 3 parts:

  1. In part one you will examine Performance and Choreography, which features creating your own dance pieces and working in pairs and groups
  2. In part two you do a set study task, examining the work of a known choreographer which involves research and performance

In part three you complete a written examination which assesses your knowledge and understanding of what you have learnt across the whole course, based on professional choreographers and existing repertoire.

Will I enjoy this course?

You will enjoy this course if you want to study a subject that is both practical and involves theory. You may have always wanted to learn about different types of Dance style and learn to choreograph and perform but never had the chance. You will enjoy this course if you enjoy working both independently and as part of a group.

What about exams?

There are two externally assessed examinations, each worth 20%.

  1. practical examination based on a set study (i.e. existing repertoire)
  2. written examination

Is there any coursework?

Yes, you will create and perform a duo or group dance piece that you have choreographed yourself. This is worth 60% of the course. You are assessed on both the performance and the choreography, as well as completing a set of notes that explain your work.

What other skills might I develop?

As well as the skills involved in creating and performing dance, you will also be able to acquire skills in working with others, expression through movement and communication with an audience.

What could I do next with GCSE Dance?

There are many things you can do with a GCSE in Dance.  You might wish to go into higher education study or formal dance training where it will be very useful to have had some dance experience and gained a formal qualification.
