6th form entry requirements
Please apply to RMGS using www.ucasprogress.com. New entrants may apply using a paper application (form below) if having difficulties with the UCAS site.
Do I need qualifications to join the Sixth Form at RMGS?
We will offer you a place if you seem likely to be able to cope with the A level courses. These courses are challenging and we think that a certain achievement at GCSE is the best guide to your future success at A Level.
You will need to meet the following criteria to join our Sixth Form:
- Examination results at GCSE which confirm an adequate base level: generally at least 5 GCSEs at grade C (or grade 5 in subjects with the new grading system) or above, including English Language and Mathematics and an average point score of 46*, based on the applicant’s best 8 subject grades;
- Subject entry requirements: it is likely that students will be expected to have achieved at least B grades in those subjects at GCSE (for the new grading system 6 is the approximate equivalent of B), but some stipulate A grades (for the new grading system 7 is the approximate equivalent of A). Please consult the Sixth Form prospectus for subject entry criteria;
- Evidence from the current school that the student could cope with advanced level study; all students will follow a programme of study of three A Levels in Years 12 and 13;
*An average GCSE point score of 46 points across the best 8 GCSEs taken. Each grade is worth the following: A* (9 or 8) = 58, A (7) = 52, B (6) = 46, C (5) = 40, D (4) = 34, E (3) = 28, F (2) = 22, G (1) =16. Diplomas and BTECS: Distinction= 52, Merit=46, Pass=40.
Example of a point score calculation
3 x A*= 174
3 x A = 156
2 x B = 92
3 x C = 120, but ignored because they are not part of the student’s best 8 grades
Total: 174+156+92 =422 ÷ 8 = 53 average GCSE point score
It is recommended that in order to be successful in Year 13, students must gain “good passes” in the internal examinations at the end of Year 12. Normally, we would expect students to begin their chosen Year 13 courses with a minimum of a D grade in these internal examinations for each subject. Obviously, every student has individual circumstances and programmes of Year 13 study will be discussed with students on an individual basis if required.
